A New iPhone Home Screen

iphone_home
Craig tweeted a great article from Teehan+Lax blog that explores the idea of a new iPhone homescreen. The concept is nothing especially new, but could be a huge improvement for an already well done device. I can see arguments for this update, but I can also see the benefits of the current, simpler home screen. Hopefully Apple takes a serious look at this and at least considers making it an option for the users that will likely prefer it.

This looks like an HTC home screen. My old HTC Touch Cruise had one just like it. Personally.. I would rather stay away from other trends and keep their own.

Nice. The thing this seems to be is an app the auto-runs on startup. That would seem to be easy. Can an app aggregate all this stuff under the current rules?

Unfortunately there is no way (currently) for an app to auto-run on startup. Apple also doesn’t allow a 3rd party app quite this level of data integration. Something like this would really need to be done by apple and run natively on the device.

This looks like a messy Nokia N95 homepage. Don’t like.

I had a similar concept that I posted recently… it appears that Apple had some patent filings in regards to a Today screen, but still a mystery as to why they are holding out. Battery life maybe?

Here was my mock up as well: http://blog.michaelmassie.com/post/824588691/apple-needs-to-bring-the-today-screen-to-the-ios
