The long awaited Typekit is now currently available to a few who signed up for early access into the system. The system shows huge potential, though I have yet to try it on an actual site. Type is rendered crisp and reliably. And it’s fast! Those used to working with sIFR will find this to be a huge improvement. Small details like being able to type directly in the browser using beautiful custom fonts—without flash—is a first.
The service has a pricing structure that starts with free, with paid plans offering more fonts, use on more websites, more fonts per site, and higher bandwidth. At this point I think the biggest obstacle is that the mainstream foundries don’t look to be on board yet. While it’s great that the latest new hip font from a small foundry is available here, until mainstream and reliably solid fonts are available (other than html safe fonts), Typekit won’t be a true solution to the web font problem.
That said, the technology is there, and that is a huge hurtle passed. One more foundries get on board, Typekit has a bright future.
