Aviary recently launched their set of online applications meant to compete with the Adobe Creative Suite for many consumer level needs. Specifically, the Aviary toolset includes 4 applications: a bitmap image editor, vector illustrator, color swatch laboratory, and what seems to be an effects or filter generator. These four apps are a first round and upcoming apps include everything from word processors to 3D modelers, audio editors, and the like.
For the moment Aviary appears to be free with some limits, or a low annual fee removes some of these restrictions. It should be noted the company has access to use work created online for promotional services and is visible by the community. The group behind Aviary has taken on the monumental task of replicating many high-performance desktop apps all online. They are competing directly with efforts by Adobe and others to create their own web based versions of their apps.
Whether or not Aviary proves that professional creative applications can be hosted online is yet to be seen. Even it it’s possible, companies like Adobe, Google, and Microsoft will be hard at work with their own versions so the competition is stiff. Should be an interesting alternative either way.
