At least a couple months ago IDEO gave their website a bit of a refresh. The update is one of the most impressive sites to come along from anyone. From the very first launch of the site, the global impact of the company is at front and center, and the experience of navigating the company’s long list of accomplishments is a pleasure.

The homepage layout manages to preview most the sites content without overwhelming the user, all while almost achieving the look of a 1960’s style poster. By most website standards, the navigational structure is completely non-traditional. Rather than use a prominent top navigation, a more site map like nav sits at the bottom of all pages. Most people will navigate directly to a particular page or topic directly from the homepage interactive (which is impressively done without the use of Flash). From that point on, features such as popular pages, news, and related content drive much of the navigation.

And not to go unnoticed, the sites page spreads almost have a printed page like quality to them, with their large images, multi-column layouts, high quality typography and detailing, interactive features, and variety. The level of variety across pages is achieved while sticking to some consistent rules; still a rarity in most of today’s web design work. The amount of work that’s gone into the many custom features and details across these pages should not be misses
IDEO has really gone the extra mile. They have taken their impressive quantity of experience and managed to represent it all with an equally impressive website.
