RIA’s or ‘Rich Internet Applications’ have been integrating into our web experiences more everyday. The NY Times website has continued to embrace the web as a key part of their delivery. Recently, they’ve taken advantage of Flash and likely Flex to produce two remarkable online tools for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The first app is a Medal Count app that allows the user to see a geographic map of olympics participating countries and how many medals they’ve accumulated. The great part is that a simple slider alters the map to reflect the results over all years past. This change occurs extremely fluidly. The user can also switch to an alternate ‘ranking’ view.

The second app is a more straightforward date schedule to keep track of events by sport, medal dates, news stories, photos, videos and also can be customized to prioritize favorite sports/events. One of best part here is that this exact experience can be downloaded to your Mac or PC in the form of an AIR app. AIR from Adobe is still very new to people and this is a great example of its very relevant use.
